Perlane® Facial Filler Guide
Houston Cosmetic Surgeon and Facial Rejuvenation Specialist, Dr. Michel Siegel
Perlane® is similar to Restylane® (both are manufactured by the same company), but Perlane® has a larger gel particle size (and concentration) of hyaluronic acid and so is used to reduce deeper skin wrinkles, facial depressions, scars, and creases than Restylane®. Dr. Siegel also uses Perlane® to shape facial contours such as cheeks and chins and for lip augmentation.
As part of a custom solution for you, Dr. Siegel may use Perlane® as part of a tailored blend of various products including BOTOX® Cosmetic and other dermal fillers matched to your skin condition and your needs. The result is an Injectable Face Lift.
Perlane® Uses and Benefits
Common uses for Perlane® include:
- Softening wrinkles.
- Diminishing worry lines between eyebrows, smile lines, crow’s feet around eyes, marionette lines at corners of the mouth (nasolabial folds), and smoker’s lines.
- Lip augmentation.
- Chin augmentation.
- Filling cheek depressions.
- Redefining lip border.
- Softening acne scars.
Other less common uses for Perlane® filler include:
- Filling hollows under the eyes.
- Creating a temporary eyebrow lift.
- Correcting facial depressions caused by fat loss.
- Softening the appearance of jowls.
What is Perlane®?
Like Restylane®, Perlane® is hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring substance found in the human tissue. The manufacturer, Q-Med, uses a unique process to create the molecule from non-animal sources and stabilize it as a crystal clear gel called NASHATM (Non-Animal Stabilized Hyaluronic Acid). When injected in the target sites, this form of hyaluronic acid supplements the body’s natural supply. It works by attracting and binding with water molecules in skin tissue to increase volume. As Perlane® is biodegradable, its effects are temporary, lasting up to 8 months.
Perlane® is Bio-Compatible and Non-allergenic
Since hyaluronic acid is not an animal-based product but a natural substance found in the skin and other tissue, there is no risk of disease transmission or allergic reactions. This means that Perlane® is bio-compatible and can be used without having to test for allergic reaction.

The Perlane® Treatment Procedure
Perlane® treatment is a 30- to 45-minute in-office procedure. Using an ultra-fine needle for minimum discomfort, Dr. Siegel will inject Perlane® directly into your skin at a deeper level than he would Restylane®. If necessary, he may use a topical agent to numb the target area.
Potential Side Effects from Perlane®
After your Perlane® treatment, there may be some swelling and possible bruising as with an injection-related procedure. You can return to work immediately and engage in normal activities, although there may be some redness and swelling present. Perlane® is a safe treatment with very few risks.

On-Going Perlane® Treatments
How long the beneficial effects of Perlane® last depends on many factors: your age, skin type, life-style, and muscle activity, as well as the injection technique. As such, many patients develop a plan for on-going maintenance with Dr. Siegel every 8 to 12 months.
Although Perlane® is a non-surgical procedure, it is still a medical procedure and should be performed by a physician, especially by a plastic surgeon trained and experienced in the surgery and aesthetics of the face.
