Changing the Projection of the Nose

Projection is the term used by surgeons to describe how far the nose “sticks out” from the face. This concept is illustrated in the example below. In the example, the face has been divided into two areas using shading. The shaded area covers the persons face, while the area that is not shaded represents the area of the nose that “sticks out” from the face. Let us look at two examples to understand this.

Changing the Projection of the Nose

The projection of each woman’s nose is expressed in the example with the Red Line. The woman on the left has a relatively small area of her nose sticking out from her face. Most people would say that she has a “short nose”, but a surgeon would describe this woman’s nose as being “shortly projected”. The opposite is illustrated in the next example. The woman to the right has a larger portion of her nose sticking out from her face, and thus her nose would be described as having “more projection”.

It should be clarified that the appearance of “projection” will also be dependent on other factors, including the degree of the tip rotation. Using surgical methods, the projection of a patients nose can be changed in conjunction with the rotation to appear smaller, and more balanced with the face.
