Asian, African American and Hispanic rhinoplasty achieves an optimal aesthetic result while retaining your natural, ethnic appearance.

Houston Asian Rhinoplasty / African American & Hispanic Rhinoplasty
By Ethnic Rhinoplasty Specialist Dr. Michel Siegel, Houston, Texas Plastic Surgeon

Ethnic rhinoplasty surgery – Asian, African American and Hispanic- is a specialty procedure of Dr. Siegel. The goal of ethnic rhinoplasty for our male or female patients is to achieve an optimal aesthetic result while retaining your natural, ethnic appearance. You can achieve a straighter nose, one that is more elegant, refined, symmetrical and in harmony with your face, while maintaining your overall ethnic features. This is true as well for ethnic female rhinoplasty where further feminization of the nose may be the goal.

Rhinoplasty techniques employed by Dr. Siegel for ethnic patients include:

  • Augmenting the nose by building up and narrowing the nasal bridge using your own cartilage from other parts of your body (e.g. nasal or ear cartilage transplant) or an artificial implant, usually made of silicone.
  • Lengthening and refining of the tip by removing or reshaping the cartilage and bone beneath the skin
  • Reducing a prominent bridge by excising or filing down cartilage
  • Narrowing the base of the nostrils by reducing the size of the nostrils as well as narrowing the overall width of the base of nose.

Dr. Siegel performs all these procedures with a minimum of external scaring if any at all.

Asian Rhinoplasty
The Asian nose typically sits deep in the face, and the upper lip tilts backwards and toward the nose at an angle less than 90 degrees. The columella, or underside of the nose, is not visible because it sits well up inside the nose.  Asian rhinoplasty patients often wish to have a narrower, elongated nose with greater projection at the tip.

Asian rhinoplasty typically involves bridge augmentation where the bridge of the nose is raised and narrowed, and the nasal width at the nose-cheek junction is also narrowed. This is in contrast to Caucasians who usually require bridge reduction.  To achieve lengthening and refining of the tip, Dr. Siegel may remove or just reshape the cartilage and bone beneath the skin.

African American Rhinoplasty
Bridge augmentation and the increasing of the projection of the nose are the most requested procedures of my African American rhinoplasty patients; that followed by a narrowing of the nose. Narrowing involves gently fracturing the nose and meticulously resetting it. The narrowing procedure can also add a subtle projection to the nose.  Some patients prefer a more pronounced projection which may require a cartilage transplant or implant to achieve.

Hispanic Rhinoplasty
From the plastic surgeon point of view, there are three main types of Hispanic noses. Knowing this classification is very important as the treatment of each of these types of Hispanic noses is radically different.

  • Type I (Castilian) with a high bridge and normal tip projection: the rhinoplasty is done with emphasis on bridge  reduction and tip modification
  • Type II (Mexican-American) with low radix, normal bridge, and an under-projecting tip: the rhinoplasty approach is quite different with grafting of the radix (lowest point of nose between the eyes) /dorsum, and tip modification with a columellar graft.
  • Type III (Mestizo) with a broad base, wide tip and very thick skin:  With this, the most challenging Hispanic rhinoplasty, the bridge is built-up with grafts or implants; there is extensive tip grafting and tip modification; and nasal base/nostril narrowing is necessary.
